2008 Future Safety Leadership Conference |
|
Sep 03, 2008 - 8:45 AM - by Sarah Reynolds
|
The 2008 Future Safety Leaders Conference is scheduled for November 6 – 8th at the Marriott-Downtownin Louisville, Kentucky!
This two-day conference, designed exclusively for ASSE Student Members, is created to prepare the future safety professional for the transition from student life to employment as a safety, health & environmental employee.
The schedule includes educational sessions ranging from real-life safety experiences to running a student section; safety tours; and plenty of opportunities to network with your peers.
We will have more information about this Conference at our September Meeting. Our goal is to have a count of students by the end of September so we can get all the expenses taken care of by the time of the Conference.
If you know you are interested in going to this Conference, please send me a message or email me at smreynol@oakland.edu.

Join our New Mentoring Program!!! |
|
Jul 29, 2008 - 7:31 PM - by Sarah Reynolds
|
Our Section along with the Greater Detroit Chapter is in the process of starting a Mentoring Program!!
Why to Get Involved in the Mentoring Program?
• Mentoring would act as a bridge for students allowing them to have some real-world experience and exposure to actual safety career events prior to experiencing them in an employment or intern environment.
• Mentoring will allow students to have a view of different career options.
• The mentoring process will help to bridge the gap between the academic world of safety and heath and the professional world of the safety practitioner.
• The mentoring process will help provide both the mentor and the mentored student with a greater exposure to the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE)
The mentoring process seeks to:
• Speed up the process of developing talent
• Assist in long-term career development
• Set up informal channels of communication
• Improve people performance
• Offer emotional support
• Ensure the spread of critical skills
The mentoring process, and associated mentors and mentorees, will be divided into three groups based on career experience and personal interest. These groups are 1). Construction 2). Manufacturing 3). General Industry
How will this Program work?
Interested mentors and mentorees will be asked to fill out a profile card that ranks their area of interest, area of professional experience, and willingness to participate in the program. After the completion of these cards members will be invited to attend the initial kick-off meeting where mentors will be introduced to their mentorees.
Our goal is to start this Mentoring Program this September so we need students to participate. If anyone is interested in participating in this Program or have any questions please send me a message on our website or email me at smreynol@oakland.edu
